What to do after being sued by a credit card company over debt

For many, nothing is scarier than being served by a credit card company on money that is owed. On first learning that a company is willing to take someone to court in order to recover this money, many panic, wondering what exactly the future will hold.

In cases where this happens, the first thing is to realize timing is everything and to contact an attorney right away. This attorney can not only take a look at the specifics, but can also provide information on what viable options may be available. Not responding is the last thing anyone should do, as this can result in a judgment in favor of the company.

Outside of handling the legal implications of being served by a credit card company, those living in the Pine Bluff area should know they are certainly not the only ones to find themselves in this type of situation. In fact, a recent survey found that a rather large percentage of Americans actually owe more in credit card debt than they have in savings.

The same survey also found that it is those who really need money in savings -- for those just-in-case expenses -- that do not have the money to pay off the debt they already have, let alone trying to save any extra. This is particularly troubling because this means that unexpected bills can end up pushing a person further and further into debt.

Overall, 30 percent of those surveyed said they had more in credit card debt and savings, and another roughly 50 percent admitted to not having enough money in savings to pay that debt off. These statistics speak to the larger economic issues of long-term unemployment and high expenses. This puts many in the position of barely scraping by and having to rely on credit to make every day purchases.

It is not surprising then that many people with credit card debt find themselves unable to pay back what is owed. This puts them in a stressful situation as creditors demand money that simply is not there.

As mentioned earlier though, no one should feel alone in this situation and debt relief solutions may be available. This is where an attorney with experience handling credit card debt can step in.
